Runner Spotlight
Sophia's athletic journey started with a diverse mix of sports—gymnastics, swimming, and basketball. Growing up with two older brothers who played basketball and a dad who coached them, it’s no surprise that basketball became a big part of her early athletic journey.
In high school, she played basketball on a club team, but running was always a fun side activity. That is, until she joined her high school's cross country team and quickly discovered her natural talent for the sport. After impressing her teammates, one of them encouraged her to take it further and try running with a club. At 15-16 years old, Sophia was faced with a big decision: continue with basketball or go all in on running. She chose running, and it was a decision she hasn’t regretted. To this day, cross country remains her favorite season, even more so than indoor and outdoor track. Her journey is a testament to following what you love and finding your true calling.
Favorite Running Spot
Sophia’s favorite running shoe is the New Balance 1080, and while she prefers white or grey colors, she laughs that those are the ones that get dirty the quickest! Growing up, her coach at her home club owned a running shoe store, which meant Sophia had the chance to try out a wide variety of shoes. When she came to Bradley, she was welcomed with a brand-new pair of NB 1080s, and they quickly became her go-to for easy runs and long runs. She likes how cushiony and comfortable they feel, making them perfect for the daily grind of training.
The New Balance 1080 is known for its plush cushioning, thanks to its Fresh Foam midsole, which offers a soft yet supportive feel, especially on longer runs. It’s a neutral shoe, designed to provide comfort without compromising on responsiveness.
Best Achievement
Sophia considers her greatest achievement to be coming to Bradley and having the opportunity to run here. She views it as an incredible chance and is fully dedicated to making the most of it, showing up every day with hard work and determination. One of her standout accomplishments was being named Freshman of the Year last cross country season in the Missouri Valley Conference. In her first year, she already exceeded expectations and proved herself as a top performer.
Another proud moment for Sophia was being selected to represent Team Ontario at XC Nationals back home in 2023. She finished 16th in the 6k cross country race, helping her team secure the win. It was a huge milestone, and what made it even more special was the fact that Coach Carlson, who is now her coach at Bradley, traveled to watch her race. He saw something special in her, and it’s clear why—there’s no one quite like Sophia Cino.
Product Recommendation
Sophia relies on ELEMENT Electrolytes to replenish, hydrate, and ensure her recovery is on point on a daily basis, especially after intense runs. While they have a very salty taste, Sophia believes that's a good sign—it means you’re getting the right balance of minerals and electrolytes your body needs. This product is especially beneficial during the summer months when you’re sweating a lot more, as it helps replace lost sodium, potassium, and magnesium. Sophia’s favorite flavor is raspberry.
For anyone who pushes their body hard during training or races, electrolytes are crucial for maintaining performance and preventing cramping. Replenishing sodium and other electrolytes lost in sweat is key to staying energized and maintaining proper muscle function. ELEMENT Electrolytes are a quick, effective way to keep you going strong, whether you’re racing or recovering.
Favorite Pre-Race Song
Word of the Week: Gratitude
For Sophia, "gratitude" is a word that resonates deeply, especially on the tough days. She finds herself grateful every day for the opportunity to run with her teammates and for the guidance and support of her coaches. The team and everyone involved in her journey makes this experience meaningful and worth every challenge. "When things don’t go as planned, whether it’s a bad race or a tough day, it's a good word to come back to", gratitude helps her refocus and appreciate what her body is capable of. It’s a reminder to celebrate the progress, and embrace the journey, no matter how difficult it may seem at times.
